A Workshop for people wishing to develop their knowledge on Housing Benefit, or a refresher course to make sure you are up-to-date with the rules and law, or an ideal follow-up course for people who have previously attended an ‘Introduction To Housing Benefit’ Workshop, this course will focus on the important issues and good practices involved for getting the various decisions and dates correct when starting or reviewing a Housing Benefit claim. The Workshop provides an excellent overview of all the key issues involved when assisting or advising tenants on making a new claim for Housing Benefit, or reviewing an existing claim.

Importantly for staff dealing with new Housing Benefit claims, whether it be assessment staff or income management advisors, this Workshop will help to ensure that the accuracy of the advice and information provided will enable most claims to be dealt with correctly first time round and encourage prompt decision-making. All the key issues will be covered, including date of first notification, date of receipt, retrospective awards, first day of passport benefit, daily rent cases, deaths, separations, first day of entitlement and other basic rules about the date of a claim.

Once housing benefit is being claimed subsequent changes of circumstances and reviews can inevitably generate lots of queries and potential changes to a claimant’s benefit entitlement. Again accuracy, leading to a prompt assessment and decision-making process, is essential. Some of the topics covered include changes Council Tax and Rent, moves, LHAs and dates, changes in receipt of benefits, changes in receipt of Tax Credits and Tax Credit payment patterns, two or more changes, and much more!

The course content, detailed notes and worked examples will reflect all the latest allowances, and will specifically look at how the more recent Housing Benefit rule changes have impacted on day-to-day work of processing HB/CTB claims. The course will provide plenty of practical examples and not just focus on pure theory, and clarify many of the more complex issues involved.

To get full benefit from the course delegates should already have a good basic understanding of the Housing Benefit scheme. By means of presentations, discussions and exercises our presenter, John Zebedee, will provide a fact-filled day covering the most up-to-date information available. Detailed course notes and helpful examples will be provided.
