Dealing With HB Claims From The Self-employed

Determining income, expenses and profit for self employed Housing Benefit claimants remains a complex area and continues to generate problems during assessment, such as delays in payments while documents are awaited and information obtained. It can often result in rent arrears accruing and cause concern for both claimants and for housing management staff alike.

Good understanding of the issues, appropriate advice, and a structured approach to assessing the income of a self employed claimant can alleviate the difficulties often experienced in administering claims for self employed people, and also for dealing with changes in their circumstances. This Workshop will look at the issues self-employed claimants face, will provide assessment staff with greater confidence in their work, and provide income management and arrears recovery staff with a better understanding of how claims are assessed.

Dealing With HB Claims From Students

Assessing claims from students often raises a number of complex issues, and the rules for granting Housing Benefit to students have changed on numerous occasions over the past few years. The Workshop will provide a good overview on which students are entitled to benefit and how much they can expect to receive. It will look at various issues, including consideration of the effect of education or training benefits for students over 18, the questions to be asked in deciding who counts as a student, consider the specific rules for lone persons, and review the various student loan income and Council Tax implications that are involved.

By means of presentations, discussions and exercises our presenter, John Zebedee, will provide a fact-filled day covering the most up-to-date information available. Comprehensive course notes and plenty of worked examples on key issues will be provided. At the end of the Workshop delegates should be able to advise students and the self-employed on their entitlement to HB and CTB in day-to-day cases, and understand the various different rules that apply to claimants from these client groups. Delegates attending the Workshop will be expected to have at least a basic prior understanding of Housing Benefit.

John has now been providing a course on these subjects for over 20 years, and delegates will appreciate the way he shows how the difficult rules can be easily put into practice! Numbers attending the Workshop will be strictly limited to encourage participation and debate.
