Assessing claims from students can often raise a number of complex issues, and the rules for granting Housing Benefit to students, and especially those with families, have changed on numerous occasions over the past few of years. This Workshop will provide delegates with a clear understanding on which students are entitled to benefit and how much they can expect to receive. It will look at issues such as the effect of education or training benefits for students over 18, joint and several liability, exemptions, discounts, and will also provide delegates with a clear and structured process on how claims from students should be assessed.

The Workshop covers all the new rules and figures that apply for Housing Benefit claims and assessments, as well as covering all the related Council Tax Benefit rules that also apply for students. The Workshop will also cover the relationship that Housing Benefit claims from students may have on people with whom they may be sharing accommodation, as well as look at the impact of family issues, absences from home and living in halls of residence.

By means of presentations, discussions and exercises our presenter, John Zebedee (presenter of over 2,000 HB courses!), will provide a fact-filled day covering the most up-to-date information available. Comprehensive course notes and plenty of worked examples on key issues will be provided. John has now been providing a course on this subject for over 20 years, and delegates will certainly appreciate the way he shows how the difficult assessment rules can be easily be converted into procedures and practice.

The Workshop is aimed at Housing Benefit administration staff, Welfare Benefit Advisers, Student Accommodation Officers and Housing Officers from both local authorities and housing associations, but anyone responsible for advising on Housing Benefit issues to people from this client group should find it very useful. Numbers attending the Workshop will be strictly limited to encourage participation and debate.
